How did the singers train for the Joy Concours 2022?
Another question we’ve heard often is “How did the singers train for the competition? What were the logistics?” Here’s Joy with her answer:
“Semifinalists in the competition received 26 hours of in-person training from their piano accompanist, who was also their repertoire coach. They practiced in rehearsal spaces that Operanauts rented in several neighborhoods across Kinshasa.
Each candidate was given sheet music for at least 2 arias that suited their voice type. For candidates curious about the characters who sing their arias, they also had the option to discuss virtually with me about the larger context of the opera that included their arias. All 20 finalists requested to discuss their arias.
After the Finale, the 3 winners received prize money and a hand-carved wooden trophy that we commissioned from a local artisan. 2 runner-up candidates received special mentions. All finalists received a certificate of participation from Operanauts.”
